what a Republican and/or a Democrat is? I do, and I just want to see who is most informed. Best answer gets the points. Unfortunaetly, I have no way to inform the ill informed after posting, so if you know, do a good job. Thanks.

I ask because I'm just curious as to how many people know why they're one party or the other.

The Democratic Party was formed by Thomas Jefferson as an opposition to Federalist policies. The Republican Party was crafted at Ripon, Wisconsin in the 1850's in opposition to the expansion of slavery. John C Fremont was its first Presidential Candidate in 1856, but it was Abraham Lincoln who was the first Republican winner in 1860 due to the schism in the Democratic Party and the creation of a trhird party- The Liberty Party under John Bell and Edward Everett.
