I feel public schools don't do a good enough job helping students with learning disabilities.

they should still have the social experience though, and the parents should take time to help at home. i don't know if everyone feels this way but i would have hated my mom if she took me out of public school. it's where i learned social skills and made friendships, and some of these friendships could last forever.

Good question. As a matter of fact I do have a friend that is homeschooling her child because the school system did not have the patience for her son, who has learning disabilities.
Now, I see that her son is progressing very well. The only thing that I feel bad about, is what happens to all those other children that doesn't have a parent that will do this for them.
I am very proud of my friend, because even though she works outside the home, she arranged her schedule to help her son.
I applaud all the parents that help their children this way.
The school system seems to be too busy to allocate time for these children. I find that very unfair to all.

Hi, I am in your shoes too. My son was in private school until they decided he needed more help than they could give him. We went to public school with the expectation they would be able to help with IEP's 504 plans, etc. He fell through the cracks. He was picked on and his teacher was not helpful at all. When his previos teacher, who has a masters in special ed suggested he would do much better at home schooling I couldn't image me teaching him, but after seeing what he was doing compared to private school I was convinced I would be better for him than anyone else. Besides all the time we were missing for Dr's appointments didn't help. We have been home for 3 weeks now and he is doing great. No fears of being beat up or picked on at home and we work around appts and never miss out on any work . If your child will benefit from programs at school that is great, but ultimately you must do what works best for you and your child.

i think it's good....I'm homeschooling my 4 yr old daughter(she's not learning disabled though) and will for the next few years atleast...Christian homeschool...It's a little cheaper than private school, but I prefer to teach her the basics myself. I will never send my daughter to public school!!and for the people who are against home schooling...my daughter spends time with other kids in dance class....in weekly field trips with other home schoolers and did you know most colleges are now wanting kids that have been homeschooled....they figured out that kids know more than most do after graduating public school...why dont you look it up yourself...

I think they're brave souls dealing with a very difficult situation in the best way they can. But I think whether anyone should take this step depends on how good the public schools are in their area. Some might be better than others.

I totally agree with you. A parent can almost always do a better job with a learning disabled child as they not only want to teach them, they love them also.

I think homeschooling for everyone is a bad idea. Kids need to learn to get along with other kids, teamwork, & socalization so they can survive as adults. Plus, unless you're a certified teacher, you won't have the skills or knowledge to teach your child properly.

I think it's a good idea. I have a nephew who has autism and he is in the public school system. His teachers aren't even trained to teach special needs kids and funding for special needs education is way too low and is still being cut.

Kids with disabilities should be in school where they can take advantage of the programs and technology available to them.
