I'll answer this a bit different. I hope this helps. I see in the other answers that a lot of Democrats think that Republicans (concervatives) are always giveng the rich tax breaks while putting the tax burden on the middle class and the poor. Nothing could be further from the truth. The rich pay over 61% of the taxes. And by the way the rich payed less taxes under Clinton than under Bush! You can check the library of congress for the numbers. So in order to be a good concervative (repo) you believe in less government in your life. You believe in a strong military. You believe that the economy is run by the people not the government. You think people should keep more of the money they make by working hard even if they are rich. You are proud to be an American. You don't try and divide the country for political gain during a time of war. There are many other things I could list but I think you get the idea of where a conservative stands. To be a good Democrat (liberal) 1. You have to believe that the AIDS virus is spread by a lack of federal funding.
2. You have to believe that the same teacher who can't teach 4th-graders how to read is somehow qualified to teach those same kids about sex.
3. You have to believe that guns in the hands of law-abiding Americans are more of a threat than U.S. nuclear weapons technology in the hands of Chinese & North Korean communists.
4. You have to believe that global temperatures are less affected by cyclical, documented changes in the earth's climate and more affected by soccer moms driving SUVs.
5. You have to believe that gender roles are artificial but being homosexual is natural.
6. You have to be against capital punishment but support abortion on demand.
7. You have to believe that businesses create oppression, and governments create prosperity.
8. You have to believe that taxes are too low, but ATM fees are too high.
9. You have to believe that the only reason socialism hasn't worked anywhere it's been tried is because the right people haven't been in charge.
10. You have to believe that homosexual parades displaying drag, transvestites, and bestiality should be constitutionally protected, and manger scenes at Christmas should be illegal.
11. You have to believe that these descriptions of Democrats is part of a vast, right-wing conspiracy.
12. You believe John Ashcroft poses a greater danger to America than Osama bin Laden.
13. You believe Saddam Hussein, Kim Jong Il, and Yasser Arafat were fairly and democratically elected, but President Bush was not.
14. You have found where the right to an abortion is written in the Constitution but cannot find where the Constitution provides for a right to keep and bear arms.
15. You applauded Jimmy Carter for talking about human rights in foreign policy but opposed George W. Bush for doing something about human rights.
16. You believe that trial lawyers taking 33 to 40 percent of a plaintiff's recovery in lawsuits is just about right, but the federal government taking this amount of our income in taxes is not nearly enough.
17. You believe that marriage is restrictive and obsolete for heterosexuals, but freeing and progressive for homosexuals.
18. You believe it is morally wrong to label anything "morally wrong".
19. You believe that home schooling denies children socialization, but proclaim they have no right to access the public schools' sports, band, or drama activities (socialization) because they're not public school students.
20. You believe minorities are intellectually incapable of using punch-card ballots except in counties where the Democrat candidate wins.
21. You believe welfare is a fundamental human right and workfare is a human rights violation.

There are many more differences but that should do for now.

Wow, so much anger in these answers. I think what you should be asking is Conservatives vs. Liberals, or Republicans vs. Democrats.
The main difference as I've noticed is where they feel responsibilty lies: conservatives believe resposibility lies with the people (give people freedom, they will take care of themselves, and everything will work out). Liberals believe the government needs to be responsible for the people's lives (social programs will manage the populace and everything will work out).
Conservatives believe more in a meritocrasy, where as Liberals believe more in an egalitarian society.
These are just general differences, you can get more specific with each issuel; but I'd like to think both sides have the best interest of the nation in mind.
Finally, the idea that conservatives are just greedy white men, and liberals are the "working man", I have five words for that: Ted Kennedy and John Kerry.

The liberal philosophical system Epistemology: Reason. Knowledge comes from human beings. "Inalienable rights" are innate in human beings, as a result of their being reasoning beings. Metaphysics: Subjective reality. Liberals don't believe that what is true for one person is true for another person. Ethics: Do things for the good of society as a whole. Liberals place more importance on society as a whole instead of individuals. Helping the less fortunate is also important. Liberals deal with people in groups rather than as individuals. Economics: Socialism. Liberals believe that an uneven distribution of wealth is not ethical, so another mechanism -- in this case, the state -- must allocate that wealth. Agency: Determinism. Liberals believe that things happen outside the control of human beings and that they have no control of what occurs in the world. The conservative philosophical system Epistemology: God. "Inalienable rights" come from God, who created human beings and gave them the capacity to reason. Metaphysics: Objective reality. There is a knowable truth that is universal for all people (this truth, incidentally, is usually the same as the politician's truth). Ethics: Self-interest. A thing should be done by an individual for the good of that individual. Things done for the good of the individual will necessarily be done for the good of society (Adam Smith's "invisible hand"). Economics: Capitalism. Conservatives believe that capitalism is the most just of all the economic systems. A person should work for what he earns and nothing less or more. Agency: Free will. There exists nothing outside the control of a human being's free will. There are no excuses because everything is the result of a person's good or bad choices.

Amazing... most people can't even answer a simple question like this without being ridiculously partisan and biased. I'm neither Republican or Democrat, so I'll try to give you a straight answer.

Democrats are a political party who tends to be both fiscally and socially liberal. That means that they tend to favour more generous social welfare programs and less social controls (such as on freedom of religion).

Republicans are a political party who tends to be both fiscally and socially conservative. This means they tend to favour less restrictions on the economy and more stringent social controls (such as on homosexuality and premartial sex).

These are very general definitions, but do remember that political terms, like 'right', 'left', 'liberal' and 'conservative' are relative. For example, to a Republican, a Democrat seems more 'left' or 'liberal', but to a socialist, a Democrat seems more 'right' or 'conservative'.

Any textbook or article on the web will give you a more in-depth answer, but I felt compelled to reply with the least-biased answer I could.

Ralph Nader clarified it perfectly "The only difference between a Democrate and a Republican is the velocity at which their kness hit the floor when the Corporations knock on the door."
The sad part is in the US, with the 2 party system the working class has no representation

Read some books about the history of both parties. This question has been asked about 20 times on Yahoo. The basic difference is that Democrats support, protect and defend the working class, Republicans support only the wealthy and the Corporations. History confirms this as truth.

Conservatives - Substance

conservatives are dreamers, they see a wealthy man and say I can be like him, lets make it easy for him
liberals see a working man and say, what will be required for him and his family to survive
While I might add that this is really to generalized, many conservatives have finall taken their heads out of the clouds
