it was a simple question regarding food preference. why did i get a violatoin notice?

Yahoo considers it "intent to chat" that's why they removed it. The very first question I asked was "what state do you live in?" They removed it for the same reason.That is also why you got a violation notice, because you broke one of there rules "intent to chat".
