im doing a talk on facts and would like to go into more detail about the word

I think the root is the latin for "done deed" or "accomplishment". Lots of latin languages have similar words (feito, portuguese, meaning completed). So the idea is that a thing that is true is a thing that is done. The book is on the table (fact) because I put it there (deed).

Also: "factoid" - which has no proper definition that I know; I prefer to say "something which is true in one context but which is now reported without that context and is therefore untrustworthy, but people believe it anyway". Like "red wine prevents heart disease" - it ceases to be true if you smoke 90/day and eat chips for breakfast.
