When i'm driving my car, when it gets to about 30mph and the rpm gets between 1 and 2, it kinda kicks in and out. It's like if you watch the dial thing on the RPM when its between 1 & 2 it starts jumping up and down, and I can feel it in the car. Then I hit the gas a little then when it gets to 2 it stops. But if I slow down it sometims does it again.. someone said the bands may need adjusted.. or a transmission flush. it's an older car 1987 celica, 146k miles. I checked the tranny fluid it was a greyish color, but still translucent. The oil is fine.

Service your tranny or your car is gonna die! That is your car slippingin and out of gears. Spend a few hundred now or a few thousand later

I have never seen so many dumb guesses.
It looks like you may need to change the fluid. Try to find an honest shop to check it out. A parts store can tell you what fluid you need and the color it should be.
As far as the shifting problem, at approx. 40 m.p.h the tranny shifts to the next higher gear.
If you speed up it will eventually shift to another gear etc. until you reach top gear.
If you slow down slightly when the dial thing is at it shifting point it will drop back a gear thus increasing r.p.m and causig a slight "jerk" that you can feel.
This is all quite normal, just speed up or slow down and it all goes away.

Transmission fluid should always be a translucent red color. . . . only time its a color other than red is performance fluid which is blue and made by B&M. Grey fluid needs changing ASAP, dont drive the car unless u get the fluid change. Your in serious danger of over heating and damaging your transmission. One other thing I would highly recommend changing your trans filter at the same time located rite on top of the trans oil pan when removed.

Sounds like you need a transmission service ASAP. It is trying to chang gears but not able to for some reason. It could be bypassing pressure by an oring because it is dirty or because it is wore out. Get it serviced and see what happens.

if it happens at other speeds (in a higher gear ) get your driveshaft balanced , if it happens in neutral the clutch / pressure plate (standard ) or torque converter (auto) need attention if your auto tranny fluid smells burnt then you may need a rebuild also have your u joints/cv joints inspected . good luck !
