Hey Jenn it is normal to be pretty scared. it is a little surprising that you have NEVER been, not even as a kid? Either way...dont worry these days they have great medicined and many officed have TV's you can watch or even simulation glasses to distract you. It should be a breeze even if they come up with a couple of cavities. Good luck.

Basically, I have never been to a dentist in my 72 years. I don't count the time I went because I was hit in the mouth and had to have the tooth fixed. I had dental insurance later, so I went for a checkup. After X-raying my mouth, they couldn't find a single cavity and that was about 50 years after the broken tooth visit. They just cleaned my teeth and that's all that has been done. Heredity plays a big part in having good or bad teeth. I brush once a day with fluoride toothpaste and my teeth are still perfect. Don't be afraid. The advances that have been made in dentistry preclude practically all discomfort.

FIrst of all Ronald (previous post) sure is lucky. I went 2 years without going and regret it so bad. Ended up having several cavities because I hadn't had a professional cleaning in 2 years. However if you're not in a lot of pain you may not have a cavity. The dentist is not that bad. Ask people for referrels before just going to any old dentist. Experienced dentists are usually much gentler than new ones.

Besides all the negativity in these answers. They are right. Normal brushing cannot stop the plaque build up that has been building up on your teeth and the bone loss that has been happening as well. Cleaning your teeth at least once a year is a must. Are you sure you never went as a child?
Its nothing to be scared off. They will probably to a thorough cleaning and check for cavities and bone loss. Then discuss ways of getting rid of your cavities and help you to prevent bone loss. You are going to have cavities there is no question about that.
Floss everyday. It will help more than you think.

Don't let these people bother you...lots of people don't go to dentists. It is not the same as not brushing your teeth. It is natural to be nervous. I go every year, and I get nervous still! It is not that bad, though. Just a bit unpleasant at times. Kudos to you for going!

Be prepared for them to want to do everything, Be sure they will find something that needs to be fixed. The first thing they will want to do is pull all your wisdom teeth. There is very little pain in visits with the medicines they have today. The drill is very unpleasant though.

First of all your parents should be reported for neglect/ child abuse. It is imperative to take a child to the dentist every 6 months.
Secondly, since you've gone all this time w/o the dentsit and dont have much pain or anything you'll probably be fine, maybe a couple cavities, and theyll have to scrape off all the placque. It might be uncomfortable, but your mouth'll feel great after :)

well, why would you NOT go to a dentist in 26 years? A normal person should have their teeth cleaned/expected at least 1 time a year, but 2 is the norm. If you say you didn't have insurance-a tooth cleaning is like $30-$50, and only takes 15 minutes. My advice is to stop your current hygiene plan(which is NOthing) and see those people called Dentists-they specialize in the maitenance and all aspects of your teeth. They are the white things you see when you open your mouth-well, yous may not be pearly white b/c 1/4 century has passed since you've considered a dental visit. Wow-Are you gonna wait untill you're 70 to get a Dr. checkup too?
