The aluminum mast will be sanded down to the bare metal. Since I don't have a sprayrig or a paint booth, my plan is to roll on 2 part polyurethane paint, then tip it out with a brush. What kind of primer should be used with the aluminum/polyurethane combination? Got any other ideas for paint? Anodizing and powder coating are out of the question.

Be sure to read the label on the paint carefully and perhaps contact the paint manufacturing company for preparation steps. With sanding, the aluminum oxide should be off the mast, but the paints vary by company.

You can use a 2 part Polyurethane enamel available from West Marine, or any marine supply store. Once you have the mast clean. wipe it down with denatured alcohol prior to painting. Pick a morning that has warmed up beyond the possibility of dew formation and/or rain.

The bare aluminum need to be washed with muriatic acid just before painting. As to primer and paint you will have to follow the manufactures instructions that are on the can.
