You may have dysmenorrhea. I was diagnosed with it at 16. Pain was so bad sometimes I couldn't walk. Birth control pills took it all away for me. A lot of times they are prescribed for that very reason, not to prevent pregnancy. Tell your mom you have severe menstrual pain and you think you should see a GYN. You don't have to mention the BCP's, just see what the doctor says. I'm not even sure if they'll give a 13 year old birth control pills anyway as I only work with adult patients. Either way, the severe pain should be evaluated by a doctor to make sure it's not something serious (as mentioned in the link I provided below). If it's just dysmenorrhea, he/she can prescribe medication, there are others besides birth control that can help control the pain. Here's a site with some great information about dysmenorrhea. Check it out and see if it sounds like what you might have. And no, I've never heard of the chocolate thing, but it doesn't hurt to try it. Good luck!

Hey mom my periods really hurt, I know that birth control pills can shorten my period and lighten up the flow, could you make me an appointment with the doctor to talk about this. Lots of girls take the pill for just this problem be honest with your mom. I don't know if chocolate helps the pain but it sure is good....

no, chocolate does not help the pain. it's just a craving that comes during that time of the month.
and most women i know generally do not take birth control to stop their periods unless they are actually having sex. try taking two ibuprofen (i think it's every 6 hours - check the bottle, it's over the counter like tylenol) - it works fast and does the trick for me! some girls i know have serious problems with cramping pain and have to see a doctor for prescribed medication, so if the ibuprofen isn't working for you, go see a doctor!

Chocolate doesn't really help with the pain, it helps with your mood. It simulates a brain chemical that is released when you're really happy. Ibuprophen (Motrin) is one of the best things for period pain, and a heating pad can sometimes help too. If you're having extreme pain you really do need to sit down with Mom and talk to her about it. Birth Control is one way to help relieve the pain, but there may be other ways that You, your Mom and your Doctor can discuss. I would show your Mom your letter. Tell her that it REALLY hurts, and you need to find someway to get you out of pain.

Well at 13 you shouldnt need birth control because you really shouldnt be having sex. But... Chocolate, I've been told makes period cramps worse... and caffiene too. Try putting a heating pad on your stomach or a hot water bottle. Maybe your mom should take you to the dr anyways for the pain, its always possible to have a cyst on your ovary, I had a couple when I was a teenager. And I used to have horrible periods... and cramps, ugh! Good luck, but try to sit down and talk to your mom. Its probably hard, but if you're mature enough to need the birth control you should be mature enough to talk to her about it. :)

I'm not sure about the chocolate. But if you put a heating pad on you tummy it will help a lot. In reguards to your birth control. I think you're too young and you're mother will think that too. But if you approach her, with honesty, and all you're concerns you're having about your body and emotions. It might take her a while but I believe she'll come around and discuss with you your options and guide you in the best direction.

In my experience, chocolate makes it worse. If you are really in that much pain, I would tell your mom immediately and get to the doc's ASAP! I was your age when I found out that I had endometriosis. It can cause you to not be able to have kids, cancer and lots of pain! I'm so very sorry that you have to deal with this. Go get help now.
Good luck.

No chocolate does not help but women tend to crave it when they are about to have a cycle. The pain can be controlled by heat and pms medicine. As for how to ask your mom, well, I think you are too young for sex. Way to young. I think if she is a decent parent your mom will agree. I think you should wait to ask for bc pills, however you should use condoms all the time if you are having sex. Way to young to have babies and ruin your life. Wait to have the talk about three more years for that one so your mom doesn't have a heart attack.

Well stay away from caffine and anything salty that can make them worse. take advil or sometype of pain medication and just tell your mom what's going on. sometimes when I get bad cramps I have a bath, soaking for a bit releaves the cramps a bit.

Chocolate will not help.
Things that help: Tylenol, Ibuprofen, heating pads, exercise, birth control pills.
See your doctor and ask for help, you may be having excessively heavy periods which warrant treatment.
