Eagles are very common in the US.
The great seal of the United States has an eagle with symbols of war and peace. The choice is yours which claw you get.

The Nazis and the Americans have copied most of the Roman Empires motto's, Symbols and architecture. The Nazis built large building around Berlin and other cities which were in a Roman style, (and as you say they had the eagle). Also the Americans have a lot of Roman architecture and they have the eagle. I think most countries around the world have taken parts of Roman culture, architecture, motto's and symbols. Another example is London, England. Sir Christopher Wren built St. Paul's Cathedral and other London buildings in a Roman style he liked the symmetrical style. The eagle however is much more to do with war and power both of which the Nazis and America like.

There are many kinds of Eagles but I think America chose the Bald Eagle as it is the only type of Eagle that is found on the North American Continent. The Nazis used the Eagle as a symbol as it represents Power and Strength. There are in fact 16 odd nations (current and past) that have used the Eagle as a symbol.

The Eagle is well known as the Greatest bird of prey, and so is thought of the mightiest bird. It's a symbol of power, loads of countries flags have eagles on them. It may be all related to the Romans starting a trend.

But imagine, what if a Sparrow was the mightiest bird of all?...

And the french, zambians, albanians, moldovians, Syrians, polish, namibians, egyptians and the austrians, ...

With its acute eyesight, the eagle has come to embody an all-seeing EYE. The eagle is often a solar symbol, and can be linked to all sky gods. It signifies inspiration, release from bondage, victory, longevity, speed, pride, father and royalty; it is often an emblem for powerful nations. But, because you are trying to be cleaver, and failing miserably, you become easy to be made a fool of.

I wouldn't blame eagles as a species for the crimes of the Roman, Nazi and American empires. Seems hardly fair on a generally hard-working and borderline-endangered bird of prey to be stigmatised because nasty folk claim it as an emblem.
