I am an American and I very much prefer British comedy/humor (or humour, as spelled in the UK).

Keeping Up Appearances... Blackadder... Monty Python's Flying Circus! British comedy is much better because it is not your run-of-the-mill ideas/storylines. British comedy is dry and whimsical and often has sarcasm, an in-your-face attitude. Most people secretly wish they can be that way in life, instead they enjoy sarcasm through the characters they watch.

Obviously, Americans prefer British comedy as well, and most don't even know it!! The Office is a take-off from the British show The Office, which ran from 2001 - 2003. And, Friends is a take-off from a British comedy called Coupling. The Office and Friends... American hits taken from the British.

Disregard Friends, it's pile of crap. But there are so many great comedies from US - Curb, Frasier, Seinfeld, Malcolm. On the other hand, UK is responsible for: The Office, Extras, Peep Show, Alan Partridge (& all the work of Armando Ianucci, Steve Coogan, Chris Morris).

UK does mainstream sitcoms badly but has some good dark comedies. US does very well made family sitcoms because they are written by teams.

I think overall America wins, because a British comedy usually has 6 episodes in a series, goes on for about 3 series and the last series is usually crap. US comedies churn out hundreds and hundreds of episodes, often doing a good job of maintaining the quality.

British people need to get over the myth about how great British comedy is, the evidence that it is superior to American is v shaky.

It used to be British! We had great stukk, like: Only Fools and Horses; Porridge; Open All Hours; Yes, Minister, etc. But now we've started struggling against great modern American comedies such as Friends, Two and a Half Men, Frazier, and of course Scrubs! The Americans just seem to have suddenly become better, sharper writers, and they hit the mark more often. I'd just like to add though that The League of Gentlemen was excellent because it very different, it was fresh and it was hilarious!

Of course British is best. Why do you think the Americans take British comedy and re-cast it with American actors.
"The Office" for one or if you go back a little further there was an American character called Archie Bunker who was a rip off of Alf Garnett.

Well, it's American stand up comedy isn't bad, but the British win on both sitcoms and stand up. E.g. Blackadder, Only fools and horses, Fawlty towers etc.etc. And Lee Evans, Peter Kay, Ricky Gervais,

I traditionally relate more to Brit humour (as I'm part of the culture) but humour (much like the spelling) is an individual thing. I mean I was always one for Larry Sanders but Seinfeld just passed me (is that a Brit thing or a personal taste in comedy thing?) by (sorry- I have an Aussie partner who just loved it)and equally the more recent direction of Brit comedy such as Little Britain and The League of Gentlemen leave me a bit cold so I guess it's largely what you relate to.There must be cultural differences or Brit shows wouldn't have to be remade for US audiences (The Office etc).

British comedy is more to the point of comedy, instead of a hidden agenda message, such as political, men bashing, race or sexual accepted life style. You tune in to comedy, and you get comedy, and also in grown up manner.
