Ok, I haven't eaten any chips or anything hard that would poke my gums, but the place where my wisdom tooth used to be, is very swollen and painful. I got my wisdom teeth pulled about 6 years ago, so it was not recently. The area is not discolored, just swollen.

Is it possible to get an absess where there is no tooth? Should I try to wait this out or go to a dentist?

Along with the several other good answers you've been given, you should also have a dentist check to see if the gum tissue attachment on the back side of the second molar(now your last tooth on that side) is compromised. If so, you may have a food trap that is causing an irritation/infection. These can be fairly easy to correct. Good Luck!

I had my wisdom teeth pulled 10 years ago. Every now and then since they were removed, the area will swell and get painful. It almost feels like there is another tooth coming through. Over the years I would ask my dentist about it and he even looked on xrays. There were no additional wisdom teeth coming through. I recently saw an orthodontist to start Invisalign and she said it could be from the formation of my jaw bones and the slight movement that can occur. Usually I will just pop some advil and the pain will eventually go away. Good luck...Hope its not an abscess.

I'd bet that you have a cyst related to some remnants of the development crpyt from your wisdom tooth. Go get an x-ray and see...... It's no big deal, but it should be removed.

There are about a hundred other things it could be, too, so you want to find out what's going on.

Yes, it may be an abcess. There may have been a small opening or crevice in your gums around where the tooth was that could cause food, plaque, germs, etc. to get into it and eventually cause an infection. Call your dentist.

Its possible you have a bone sequestra (a dead piece of bone ),or a tooth fragment working its way out . Another common condition occurs when only one wisdom tooth is extracted leaving the opposing tooth to erupt and eventually impinge on the other jaw .
You should have it checked out.

This is what pisses me off about wisdom teeth hysteria. She is asking until the teeth are taken out what to do and people's answers are : YOU HAVE TO TAKE THEM OUT!! Come on now that doesn't help. Rinse with salt water, use mouth rinse, brush well, DON'T Tounge it. Take ibuproferin or whatever

you may have a bone fragment from the extraction finally working its way out. this is not uncommon. i would go see my dentist. a simple xray will reveal the problem. there are such things as "distomolars" very small nonfunctional teeth that come in behind wisdom teeth (maybe one is coming in) though ther are pretty uncommon. yes...see your dentist. dont use heat. use ice and take motrin in the meantime. good luck

there could be a piece of tooth that they missed that is trying to break through the surface of the gum the exact same thing happened to my husband.
