I decorated my room, and I absolutly loved doing it. I want to be an Interior Designer when I'm older. What can I do to prepare for doing that job (Besides collage,I'm 12)? I have "Punch! Super Home Suite" (The $40 one), I check out books from the library, and I love looking at matching furniture, pillows, valences, ect, ect. I just don't have anything else to decorate! I just moved, so I don't have many friends yet (And I'm homeschooled). My Mom won't let me re-decorate the rest of any part of the house. What CAN I decorate?! My room is complete, and I'm not changing it for quite a while. I'm so bored I'm figuring out what my house is going to be like when I grow up! Any ideas to what I can decorate?

At the moment I can't use my right hand because it's broken. Also I cannot sketch worth poop. 5 stars to best answer!

You should make little models of rooms in different designs that you like, all it takes is a cardboard box, or something similar and some imagination, let me know how it all works out...

There are more and more colleges that are offering the Interior Design program, so if not now, soon, start looking into different programs. Most homeschooled kids I know were ready for college by 16, not 18, so college for you may not be too far away. By the time you start applying to places, you'll want a good idea of where you want to go. It's never to early to start reading up on stuff.

Lastly, and more importantly, even though you're new to your area, there's no reason you couldn't start marketing your talent. Interior designers don't just focus on entire rooms or houses.... they also focus on furniture pieces. Sooooo, here's my advice: try buying a few really cheap pieces of furniture from your local Goodwill or yardsale. With a few bucks invested in sandpaper, brushes and paint, along with some elbow grease, you could make some really nice pieces of furniture that people might be willing to buy from you! You could start your own business.

Better yet, if you had a charity or community club you really wanted to support, you could sell your pieces for charity.

Worth a thought (and something I did when I was dreaming about being a designer).

Good luck, hon. :)

Sketching is important but learning how to use the proper computer programing (for design there is a few different and they all have to do with furniture placement, measuring , ect)can be just as important, if not more. I'd call the local community college and ask to speak with a person who helps with placement and helps people pick out what majors they should be in and ask a slew of questions on how you can be better prepared for interior design classes. I'd also call up local decorators and ask real questions how they became interior decorators. Make it into one of your homeschooling projects and write up a report - which would also serve you as a basic plan on how to follow your dreams.

If you have cable TV then watch HGTV as much as humanly possible. They have decorating shows on there that can teach you so many basics and will help keep you abreast of trends. If you get an allowance, subscribe to decorating magazines. Read them cover to cover and cut out pictures to start a decorating file for someday reference. Send for catalogs such as Ethan Allen Furniture to learn what good traditional design looks like. Go to the public library and check out every decorating book they have a few at a time and pour over them in your spare time. If you can't sketch, can you close your eyes and visualize well? Decorate rooms in your mind and write down what you see in your mind and include every little detail even down to the type of trim on the sofa pillows and the tiniest little vase. Keep your imaginary rooms and the photos you have clipped in a notebook. It isn't as much fun as actually decorating but it can help you satisfy the urge to create.

Starting now to prepare for a future career in interior design is fantastic. While you're out of commission (your broken hand) use your eyes. Visit fabric stores, furniture stores, even tour homes to see what out there. Even movies show design ideas in homes from the simplest to the most elaborate. Learn to appreciate all the different types of design. There's nothing worse than an interior designer who knows or designs in only one fashion. In the major book stores on clearance tables they have a lot of coffee table books that show different styles such as French Country, English Country, Apartment Living, Traditional Homes, etc. You can do it, I know you can. Just keep at it and follow through with your dream.

Doll baby, you don't have to be able to draw beautifully, just squares, rectangles, circles on Quadrille pad will do. (Geometers -ask your math teacher- have all sorts of shapes you can use.)

Look through magazines, pull out the pages of decorating ideas you like and keep a scrapbook or something similar. You could cut and paste rooms with the things you love best.

You seem very cleaver, you'll come up with great ideas. Oh, sheets, light blankets make cool draperies or wall hangings, just for a quick change. Have fun.

You're really doing everything that you can right now. Maybe once your hand heals you can start taking some art classes b/c that will be important when you start to design. In the meantime.. watch as much Trading Spaces & While You Were Out Episodes as possible :-) They're fun to watch and you learn a lot. The shows are on TLC. I watch them on Saturday mornings. Much love and luck :-)

well your going to have to learn to sketch or you can skip the deal of being a designer!
sorry but it is the truth! so if that is your vision and you think you suck! and your 12 then you got tons of time to learn how to sketch!
iw ould practice that and sketch up a room or two and decorate them....
so your only real option is to decorate your room right? sence mom won't let you do the house!
and your stopping yourself from doing that because you just did it! well i guess that's your call if you want to keep it then keep it but if you want to decorate then redue it you are the only blocker on that!
Well good luck
