Same reason they do for most English comedy shows. They take the idea and then ruin it. Nothing can ever be as funny as the original, what ever it is.

The American version of "The Office" won several television awards over here in America. (The Emmy's)
Americans admire British comedy and model some of their shows after British models.
I personally don't like "The Office" but many others do. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, you know!

I've seen both versions and I think they both suck, the Brits do have a little better one and it is ORIGINAL. The last original TV show that came out of Hollywood was Firefly and the idiots cancelled it before it was even through the first season.

im not sure if they themselves bragged about it being better.
if it wasnt for mr. gervais and mr. merchant, they wouldnt be where they are not.
personally, i think the that UK office is much more funnier than the US one. simply because of david brent. his timing is perfect on every joke, and though theyre both idiots, he seems to be somewhat smarter than michael scott
