If you file yourself and the divorce is uncontested, then it should cost less than $400 (US). If you hire an attorney then expect to pay more of course. An attorney can get you a better settlement; if you have a lot of property or kids or both you might want to hire an attorney even if the divorce seems mutual/amicable. Attorneys' fees start at about $75 an hour and go up from there.

If the other party does not want to divorce, or if there is a custody issue, then you may end up paying thousands. Strategy here is key-- don't let the attorney decide your strategy (for example, when and how to inform your spouse of your intent to obtain a divorce) for you-- they will always pick the most expensive way.

This is just my opinion, but divorce should always be the very last resort. You can live separated, for instance, and be quite happy and content and not put yourself and your kids, if any, through hell. If you decide to go through with it, then decide how to proceed based on your own intelligence and perhaps the advice of a loyal friend; again, don't let an attorney recommend strategy to you. You'll pay more and be much less satisfied with the result.

I hope this was helpful!

Depends how much you have, which state, if there are children, reason for divorce, ability to agree on the divorce settlement, etc. The more you have the more it will cost you. If it is simple and you both want a quick divorce then probably less than $2000. Otherwise, the sky is the limit. You can fight each other under neither one has a dime left.

That depends on what state you're in and what the lawyers charge. Also it depends on how complicated the divorce is, do you have kids, property to divide etc. If it is a simple divorce I would say around 1000-1500 dollars.

Well I have done it twice! I need more info. What state are you in? And are you going to do it without a lawyer between yourselfs , or do you need a lawyer or lawyers? Respond back with info first and maybe I or someone can answer you.....I just went through this a year ago.

It depends on how much your lawyer charges per hour and how many issues you have to fight out with your spouse. And be careful, cause lawyers love to goat you into a fight.... that's how they make money.

They use phrases like: "I can get you more than that" and "well, that doesn't seem fair".

Why are divorces expensive? Cause they're worth it!!!

There's probably no accurate way to answer that based on your question. It's going to depend on how amiable the divorce is, whether there's a custody battle, how much each participant has financially, who your lawyer is, who's at fault (ie was she cheating, was he abusive, vice versa, etc), and how long it gets drawn out.

You'd be better off quietly packing all your junk, and in the dead of night, skip town. Change your name and get a new identity.
