An engine block heater is offered for those who live in cold weather areas. It is an electric item which is plugged into your engines cooling system and keep the coolant warm. you plug it into your home electric outlet...and in the morning you go out and the heat is there right away,,,no need to let the car warm up.

One warning...and not a big thing...still let the engine warm up for a minute before running as to get the fluids flowing.

I am 68 years old and I have never had a need for a engine block heater, and I was in upstate New York for 4 years in the ;late 50's. I think the determining factor would be the climate and temperature range in the location where you park your vehicle.

I have no idea what that e-tard is talking about donuts and such...

A block heater is something used on cars that are in colder climates. It plugs in to your house electrical recepticle (some places have them in parking lots) and it heats your engine just enough to make starting easier, allow the oil to flow quicker and your heater warm up sooner.

If you live in the south and have no intention of going north, save your money.

Where do you live, do you garage your car or truck? Is it a diesel?

Below 10 deg consistently for gas engine yes.
Below 20 deg consistently for diesel engines yes.

They do use quite a bit of electricity 1500 to 2500 watts.
They need to be plugged in consistently while engine is off to maintain the temp, they take forever to warm up when full cold.
Don't operate with engine running it will damage the heater.

I haven't seen that option available in my area. I used to live in Wisconsin and up there you should have one if you park in a unheated space for any length of time.

I believe that is true in most Northern states.

Block heaters come as standard on most Diesel Trucks, I am referring to Semi's

If you like to do donuts, and burnouts and rev your engine really hard, then you should definitly get a engine block heater. Needless to say, if you accelerate easily and slowly there is no need waste nearly $150.00 on one.
