I know what traffic light is, but I don't know what the signs indicating for one to "drive carefully as it is a school zone" or the "stop sign" and etc., are called. My friend said it's called traffic sign. is that correct?

The legal term or definition of the various visual directive pacards along the roadway may vary from State to State. You might be able to find the definition in the motor vehicle statutes for the State in question. The statutes are available at most county courthouse law libraries or the capitol law library or on line at "findlaw" key "Cases and Codes" and follow the links for the statutes you desire.
