A submarine dives 83 m at an angle of 18° below the horizontal. What are the two components?
x=___m
y=___m

can you show me how to solve that?

If 83 meters is the total distance travelled at the given angle....

x = 83 (cos 18deg) = 78.9m

y = 83 (sin 18deg) = 25.6m

Check by Pythagorean Theorem...(78.9)^2 + (25.6)^2 = (83)^2
Pretty close due to rounding of decimals.

components are listed below .for further learning of writing the horizontal and vertical components learn resolution of vectors from a physics text book. always the X component is cos function and Y component is the sine function

X= [83 x cos(18)]=78.93m
y = [83 x sin(18)]= 25.64m

This can be solved by trignometry using relationships of right triangle.

Sin 18 Deg= Y/83 ; Y=Sin 18*83 = 0.31*83=25.65m
Cos 18 Deg = X/83 ; X= Cos18 * 83= 0.95*83 = 78.94m

Therefore X= 79m approximately and Y = 26m approx

Do you have example problems in the book with triangles?
Do you have a calculator?
x=83*sin(18 degrees)=approximately 25.7 meters
y=83*cos(18 degrees)=approximately 78.9 meters

If the above answers are right, (25.7)^2 + (78.9)^2 should equal approximately 83.

x = 83 * cos (18)
y = 83 * sin (18)

Just drawing a right angle triangle... then the longest one is 83meter.

Hmm...its hard to explain it since i cant draw on here but basically you are using a right triangle. 83m is the hypothenuse and you can use sin and cos to solve for the x and y components. x is going to be 83*cos(18) and y = 83*sin(18)
Sorry wish I could explain it better.

83 is the hypotenuse...
x = 83 cos(18)
y = 83 sin(18)
