There is an ingredient called "malt" in a chocolate malt. A chocolate shake only has ice cream, milk and natural or artificial chocolate flavor. A chocolate malt includes malt, like the "malt" in malted milk balls (read label)

Malts have malt added to them and they are richer and thicker,
when I order a malt I always ask them to add extra malt
Shakes have ice cream and milk and don't have as much flavor
