It's just a regional thing, it doesn't matter. Call it what you want or conform it's your preference. Also, pronunciation of words vary from place to place too, such as the pronunciation of "route" (rowt or root)

Regional Dialects for the same product.
Pop, Soda, Soda-Pop, Soft Drink, Soda Water, Soft Beverage etc...in GA most things are called Coke(CoCola) no matter what they are.
I've lived all over the U.S. & I find the local dialects fun.
Maybe that dirty look is confusion.

Some people have to make a big deal out of the smallest things. In California we call it soda, and in Oregon they call it pop. It is the same thing different location. I hope that I was some help.

I live in Chicago and I say "soda." I just don't like the way "pop" sounds, but everyone else I know says "pop." There's no difference--its just a colloquial thing. Say it how you want and don't worry about people who give you looks. They can understand what a "soda pop" is, right?

In mn everyone calls it pop. I used to think it was weird to hear it called anything else but I more recently have wondered who came up with the term "pop" and thought it was kind of dumb, unlike most people here who don't give it a thought. I don't like calling it soda just cause it reminds me of cream soda which I don't like... so I either just call it pop like always or call it by its name, Pepsi, Coke, etc.

No difference, just regional variations on a theme. The majority of people in America call it soda, with pop being a close second.

Some people call all flavors of soda "Coke".

Depends what area you live in. In my area it is pop but in a town that is only an hour away they call it soda.

No it shouldn't matter. Say whatever you feel comfortable saying. If you get a strange look just try to think ( does the person understand what I'm asking for?.) Give people the benefit of the doubt.
