My Springer Spaniel is about ready to switch to adult food. She has been getting fed purina growth and development her whole life so far. It's pricey and gives her bad breath but she seems to really like it. I would like some suggestions on good healty adult dry food for her that is reasonably priced and doesn't make her stink. I live a good distance from any actual pet stores so gas money is also a factor when buying her certain foods. Is there any food worth while at local grocery stores? I've heard some horror stories of cheap dog foods and I want to make the right decision for my dog.

Purina makes a good dog food. The Purina One that you have been using is a great start. The Adult Food may not make your pup as stinky as the baby food, so it could be worth a try. However, Beneful also makes a fair priced, good dog food. Because your springer is prone to hip problems in her adult life, you may want to keep her on a variety that has glucosimine in it, typically in most "large breed" formulas.

Stay away from store brands, especially Wal- Mart's Ole Roy. The fat content is sky- high and will take its toll over time.

The USDA is such that the minimum requirements for a food with "premium" on the label is sufficient and nutritious for your pet. Any adult formula that has "premium" on the label will be good for your dog. While the bag may cost a dollar or two more, you will save in the long run, because your pet won't suffer the joint problems of an obese animal and will have a healthier skin and coat, less prone to common health concerns that affect pets with a less than nutritious diet. You truly are what you eat:)

Dog Chow works really well. Its not high in fat, it affordable and sold at most grocery and c-stores. Dont use walmarts brand ol'roy. That stuff is so bad for your dog. i was feeding it to my dog and had to switch her b/c she got so many cavities in her mouth. Once you decided which food to switch her to then keep it the same. Dont switch brands without doing it gradually over a weeks time. That includes switching from puppy to dog food. Just start by adding a little in with her puppy food and continue to add more each feeding until thats all shes eating. If you dont you may run into a stinky problem.

Start switching over to adult food around one years old. It is important for the dog to get all the nutrients they can as puppies and puppy chows are filled with nutrients. Don't jump from puppy to adult though ease the dog into the new food. Start mixing in a little at a time and slowly and gradually increase the amount of adult food and decrease the amount of puppy chow. Your dog may get a little bit of dairhea but that will be normal just keep them off the white carpet.

We've found over the years that in the long run, it is far cheaper to feed our pets the best food we can get. Our vet bills are lower and our pets are all very healthy & seem to live very long lives.

We've been using NutroMax but Science Diet, Eukanuba, Iams and others make excellent pet foods. Your vet may be able to recommend a good brand. Or a local pet supply store may be able to help you decide.

Definitely avoid Old Roy and the other low-cost foods. Trust me on this, there is no such thing as cheap pet food. What you save on food, you spend on vet bills and heartache.

Look at the ingredients.
The first ingredients should be poultry or some other meat.
Some cheap food has corn or some other grain &/or filler listed as the first ingredient.
The first ingredient listed on the side of the bag is what the dog food is mostly made out of.
I prefer Iams for my dog but Eukanuba is also good as well as Science Diet, but it can be pricey.
Find a food that is both wholesome & resonabley priced & stick with it for life of your dog.
I hope I could help! Good Luck!!

I got my dog a 40lb bag of Gravy Train for $10.99+tax and she was so exited while eating it. I've never seen her so exited about food. Before I got her this kind of food, I tried Beneful, Science Diet and a store brand dry food (Western Family) and had to give it to her in the mouth in order to have her eat it.

Iams is the best I heard but its kinda expensive, I feed my Pit bull Purina Dog Chow Healthy Morsels and she loves it !! I think it words pretty good on her cause is 85 pounds and she eats once a day. Some time I crush up some Vienna sausage or raw eggs in her food...it makes her coat shinny...

Diamond is good, but it's only available in pet stores,so I would stick with Purina or Pedigree.Feed primarily dry with a bit of canned meat or Bil-Jac Fresh Frozen, eggs, sardines in oil,and scraps of raw or cooked meat.
