I'm a directory proofreader and I spend all day making sure the names and addresses are spelled right so that people can contact one another. I keep wondering, though, who gets to name the roads?

Well here in Las Vegas, anyone can submit a name for a street.
I kid you not,. Vegas is running out of street names and the city will accept anyname including your own if you like and submit to the streets department. THy will consider it and if there is no objuctions, it gets named. It is that simple

I am a moble mechanic and beleave me i have to buy the clark county street guide every year. To give you an idea, last year there was 1200 new streets added to this book and 1500 new streets just this year alone.

In new developments, the developer often gets to make up the names.

Sometimes streets are named after family members.
Other times named after famous places (eg. European ski resorts - Gstaad, Zermatt, Chamonix, etc.)

Or themes are used to show a streets in development have a commonality (Northwood Drive, Northglen Square, Northwind Square)

See links for examples.

A person who inhibits, or discovers a lonely road or small pathway with no name gets to name that place after themselves. Such as my main county was named after Lord Simcoe. So we became the county of Lord Simcoe. Plus there are people who can afford to issue their names under street legitimates but that a different story.

The city council in your area. You can petition the council to get a street named anything if you have enough signatures. Otherwise the city planners just make stuff up.
