My ex-fiance and I are thinking of getting back together. But one of the biggest stresses in our relationship was the distance. I live in California and she lives in London, ON, Canada. Right now it costs about $500 a trip for one of us to go see the other, and that's for just a few days. Neither of us are opposed to moving, but without getting married we wouldn't be authorized to work in the other country. How do we make this work?

I guess the biggest question that only you can answer, is why did you break up in the first place, and why are you getting back together? (All right--two questions!)

First things first. Assuming that you are doing emails daily and phone callings, you have to decide what direction you are going to take. Once you have done that, the next obvious question is about the future. In long distance relationships, the parties realize that they are going to incur alot of costs to 'develop' the relationship. Since you were engaged already once, you should know each other by now to decide if you will ultimately get married. Either spend the $'s and make the trips to make sure, then set a date and get married, or move on, save the monies, and look for someone else here in the states.

You have some questions to answer, and some in depth soul searching to do. You probably are closer to answering your own question than you think.

So if you were/are engaged, why wait to get married? Think about what other stresses you have in your relationship, and are they really a big deal, or do you love her enough to be with her forever. If you do, then let "forever" start now and get married and go on with life. If you want to be together, do what you have to do. Put your relationship first, because if you don't you never will, and relationships like that don't last. She needs to feel she's your priority, and she needs to feel that every day.
