This is her first pregnancy but for some reason i was expecting more that just 5. She was mated with a red and i was hoping that i would get some red pups as well but all of them are black and brown. Is all of this a normal thing. Just wondering

Congrats on the litter! First, you must realize that some dark reds may appear black when they are first born and wet. Only experienced breeders or vets can know this. 5 puppies is a very good number for a first-time mother. There is still a managable number of healthy babies, with no culling required just because of numbers.
The red color is a recessive gene in Dobermans, so unless your female has a red parent or grandparent, more than likely she will not produce a red pup. It may happen, but it'll be hard to breed for it. Be happy you have healthy babies, no matter what their color is!

You should always keep taking her to the male once every day to make sure she's pregnant and could have more puppies. It's normal for a first time that the dog will have less puppies and won't do a good of job. The colours are just about the female and male and there mom and daddies. But if you don't have any red that's normal. It just like a human has blue eyes even though the mom and dad have brown. The grandparents could have had blue.

Yes. But, some of them may change colors. This is not necessarily going to happen, but it may. My dog had puppies several years ago. She is black and white and the male was honey brown. I was hoping for some brown puppies, but they were all combos of black and/or white. But, when the grew older, some of the black hair turned brown. But, I ended up keeping an all black puppy even though I thought I wanted a brown one, which we now had. The point is, whether your puppies or brown or black or red, they are still really cute. And just like people, the color of a living being doesn't matter, just the inside. (The pups personality) Hope this helps!

Yes this is very normal, just because you breed your dog with a red doesn't mean that you are guaranteed red pup's. that's all just luck of the draw and which dog has a stronger gene. and as far as the number of pups that is totally normal they don't really have a lot of pups on the first litter. be thankful that you have 5 because when they start moving they are lots of work!
good luck!

Black and tan is the dominant color of dobes and many times that is all you will get in a litter.
My friend had a red male and black female had 12 pups first litter and all balck second litter 11 all black.
5 is small for a litter but not unusal.

The first litter is usually 4 to 6 puppies. She'll probably have more the next litter.

I think she did great for her first litter! Five is a sound number and hopefully they are all healthy.

As to the colors, some may turn. They may not. Either way, mom did a great job. Make sure she is getting lots of water and extra food for nursing.

Good Luck and Take Care.

Yes, with my tzu's sometimes they only have one puppy. So you never know how many they will have.

With color you can guess to what colors you might have but you can never be sure. Dose your female have red in her back round. Black must be a more doment color then the red.

Since red is recessive, she must carry the red gene to have red puppies. However, the puppies will carry the red gene since they have gotten it from their sire.

the black gene is dominant. Hopefully both parents are tested for wobblers and HD.Hopefully you will not be having the babies tails chopped off with no anaesthetic at a couple of days old either.
