Well know that youve been walking for 5 months next time you go to the park/track start by brisk walking then change it a little by walking faster until you're jogging, sort of like by running in place, plus it burns more calories since youre taking your time rather than doing fast and simply running joggin takes a little more effort, i dont know if you understand but it helped me lose about 30lbs in 1 month you just have to really dedicate at least an hour 3-4days of the week and also let your body rest and drink lots of h2o!!!! I started as an obes fat kid weighing 260lbs & could only jog half a block. 3 months later after building up slowly by doing a combination of walking & jogging I was able to jog a full mile non-stop.
Build up slowly by speed walking & jogging lightly. I recommend wearing comfortable clothes & wearing running shoes. I would also recommend a bottle of water & a disc man. Music has been known to inspire people so rock some tight tunes.

There are alot of great books you can read before you start. If you can develop good habits from the beginning, you will be ahead of the game, because many beginning runners tend to injure themselves by doing too much too soon and doing it incorrectly.
The book "Chi Running" by Danny Dreyer has helped me get rid of some bad habits and it promotes a good efficient good running form.
Also, you should definitely try www.runnersworld.com
It's the website for Runner's World magazine. There's loads of stuff you can learn there. There are all kinds of forums (Training, Injuries, Shoes, Beginners, etc.) where you can post questions and answers to the large community of (generally friendly)runners there. The magazine is good too. I've been getting it for years. It's a good motivating tool and I find it has an uncanny way of showing up in my mailbox just when my *** needs a good kicking.
You can find a great a Run/Walk program at that website for starters and when you're ready, you can find a training program for how to run your first 5k race! But definitely look up the Chi Running book at Amazon.com too.

Start slowly, and then gradually build up speed. Don't rush, just go at the pace that works best for you.
You may also want to check local stores selling running gear, as they tend to also operate and/or be linked with running/jogging/walking groups, or they may offer courses. You can also look online for local groups and courses as well.

this is my area of expertise
The first few weeks are going to be difficult but please dont give up, once you learn to have control of your body your runs will be amazing! You will look forward to going for a run, its such an adrenaline rush.
slow jog first. Kind of like a fast walk, but keep your pace steady and breath through your nose, dont breathe through your mouth you'll get less air in your lungs and you'll run out of breath easier, dont try to over do it you dont want to pull a muscle, but push yourself, pushing yourself is key to running long distance (I gave birth 7 months ago and am running 10-13 miles now). have a route to run, after that route gets easy expand it, and once that gets easy expand it again and so on.
I noticed that my muscles go through stages when i begin to run, muscles need to loosen up and get into the groove of the run thats why those first few minutes hurt, but once you loosen up those muscles you will see how awesome it is to have control of your run. Also, get to know your body and your muscles they will tell you which way of running works best for you. I run with a soft step, I dont step hard on the ground, I have learned that
running with a soft step that I workout my butt, thighs and quads much better. if i run with a heavy step it emphasis more on my lower legs.

now if you want to challenge yourself when you get in the groove of things.. go for a jog with some 2lb or 3lbs weights, alot of my friends say it looks easy but its not. on top of 'your' weight you are adding 4 or 6lbs more...hehe its not easy if you think about it! I run with 3lb weights 4 times a week, the other three days are my long endurance runs.
