If this is part of the film package, it is called the tab. You bite it to hold the film in place.
Otherwise you hold the film in place with your thumb.

Dental x-ray film comes in 6 sizes.
00 - small for children
0 - large for children
1 - narrow
2 - standard
3 - bite wing
4 - occlusal

All sizes, except 4 can come in either plain, or tab. Size 4 comes in plain only.

xray film is not cardboard. There is the film itself, a thin layer of lead lining and the plastic covering it is in.
