Tell your "friend" (just kidding) to maintain a healthy diet of three meals a day, but to cut back on the foods that have a high fat content - dairy products, rice, pastas, etc. Drink lots of water. Start an exercise program after talking to a doctor. Exercise will increase the metabolism (the rate calories are burned) and will burn calories in the process. Starvation diets decrease the rate of metabolism. Be a trainer partner if it helps. Support is very important when you try to lose weight. Good luck with your friend.

Absolutely. This one is a no hunger diet, and it begins to work immediately. It's called The Shangri - La Diet and it's written by a UC Berkeley professor. It has nothing to do with metabolism. It changes your setpoint. (the weight your body goes to and you eat to get there. This lowers it.) You can choose one of two substances to use to begin: extra light tasting olive oil (NOT extra virgin) OR sugar water. There must be NO flavor associated with taking them, and you must take them one hour before and after food. You are getting calories with no flavor and it fools your body and lowers your setpoint. See the book for details. e.g. 1 tablespoon olive oil once a day, or maybe twice and one teaspoon sugar (not brown or raw) in warm water and sip slowly.

The best part is you lose all desire for sweets and junk food. You eat half as much, and actually eat much healthier. NO HUNGER is the key..I've lost 15 lbs in a month on and have no cravings, but what I eat is all good for me and I can eat whatever I want. (FYI, sweetness is not flavor. Don't think you can make this a Coke or a cup of tea. Must be plain water. I personally used the extra light tasting olive oil)

Only eat at meals, and eat til your full and not over, and you shouldn't even need to diet. Most diet plans are unhealthy and don't work. Try cutting down on salty, fatty, and sugary foods if you want to be healthier. Don't try to go cold turkey on anything though, because then all you'll do is think about food. Excercise is good too.

Prevention magazine (rodalebooks.com I think) has a book on the glycemic diet which claims that rather than cutting out foods, you learn the right foods that can lower your glycemic index and cause you to lose weight while still eating the appropriate amounts of food.
