I prefer an older truck the new ones aren't built for off road. If you want to stay relatively stock I would go for a Chevy because the parts are cheaper and if you go off road in real tough places you will break stuff. The best way to go is to buy an old beater truck and put in heaver axles, don't forget locking differentials. Long travel suspension that gives lots of articulation. A high torque motor, you don't usually need it to rev very high. double transfer cases can be real handy because in real tough going you cant have to low of a first gear. A good winch rated to pull 1 1/2 times your trucks weight can be a life savor as well. Protect everything from the undercarriage to a good roll cage.

I'd go with either Ford or Dodge.

Working in the oil industry I constantly drive where there are no roads. The only trucks my company will use are dodge and ford because they last the longest.

If you were planning on making lots of changes to the truck and use it recreationally, you can't go wrong with any American made truck to be honest. I would just stay away from imports.

My opinion is the chevy silverado 4 x 4 because I think in a sticky situation it has more horsepower and torque. The ground clearance is not the best but it does make up for it in the torque and horsepower.

Jeep because it has good clearance, roll bar and good grip. My second choice is the older Ford Bronco.

Any short wheel base, with locking differentials, skid plates, toe hooks and a wench. Most manufactures offer this.

Toyota. They don't break down or get stuck like the other larger trucks.
