Toxic shock syndrome is possible if you use tampons or not, but tampons are directly linked with TSS; absorbency does increase the risk of contracting TSS.

TSS is not only something that happens when you leave a tampon in for too long, it is something that can occur even when you do not use tampons, tampons simply increase that risk the longer they are within your body or depending on the type of tampon used – i.e. Commercial such as Tampax, Organic such as Natracare, Sponge such as Jade & Pearl, Soft tampon such as Gynotex or Homemade tampons.

TSS is the result of bacteria called staphylococcus aureus, which are naturally occurring within one in three people, it is found all over the body not just the vagina, sometimes this bacteria produce toxins that cause toxic shock syndrome – TSS is essentially blood poisoning. Bacteria love moist humid places, so the pores environment of the tampon, where there is discharge as well as nutritious menstrual blood, makes for the perfect environment for bacteria to multiply.

Tampons are a risk no matter the absorbency, no matter how long you leave them in for. This is because tampons prevent normal vaginal cleaning functions, give bacteria a pores environment where bacteria can multiply, absorb vaginal discharge leaving vaginal splits, contain chemicals that can interfere with vaginal pH that in turn messes up bacterial balance. Higher absorbency tampons are linked strongly with TSS because they further issues already existing with tampon use, this is why if you do use tampons you are advised to use the lowest absorbency possible.

It amazes me the reactions these sorts of questions get, leaving a tampon in for too long will increase the risk that is already present, more so in commercial tampons where synthetic materials and chemicals are used unnecessarily. If a woman has contracted TSS through tampon use that does NOT make her lazy nor does it mean she has used a tampon incorrectly. TSS is a horrible disease that can ruin or even take a persons life, women who fall victim to TSS are not to blame, and it is disgusting the amount of victim blame going on here!!

If you have a heavy flow, then I strongly recommend you try menstrual cups, these can be left in safely for up to 12 hours any time during your menstrual cycle including when you are asleep, not menstruating, or swimming. Menstrual cups are safe, convenient, body-positive, cheap and environmentally friendly, as well as many other benefits. You can use reusable cups that are bell-shaped, or if you prefer there are also diaphragm shaped softcups that are disposable. I would at very least say to stop using tampons until you know the risks, then that said no one who knows the risks would use tampons, seriously.

There are two different types of TSS.

There is the TSS which is caused by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, associated with the use of tampons. Some suspect that certain types of high-absorbency tampons provided a moist, warm home where the bacteria could thrive. But, frequent tampon change and alternating between pads and tampons helps to avoid this problem.

And

Streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS) caused by streptococcus bacteria. STSS appears after streptococcus bacteria has entered injured skin (cuts and scrapes, surgical wounds, chickenpox blisters).

Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is an uncommon bacterial infection - but not rare. I actually had a friend have this when I was a teenager - she was in the hosital for a few weeks! It was more of a problem in the 80's when there was a problem with a certain type of tampon - not sold any longer.

TSS is also associated with the birth control sponge, diaphragm use. TSS is normally considered only a problem for women who are on their period, but anyone who has any type of staph infection (pneumonia, skin/wound infection, septicemia, osteomyelitis, abssess, gyno problems, sinus infections - anything).

Symptoms of TSS are:
sudden high fever - over 102
faint feeling
watery diarrhea
headache
muscle aches
blood pressure problems (usually low BP)
Clammy hands
rash

But, the above are also symptoms to many things - flu!

Prevention: hand washing is key.

TSS, the mortality rate is less than 3% - in USA.
STSS, mortality rate is 30% ~ 70% - in USA.

If you continue to have a very heavy flow - discuss this with your gyno - you could have an underlying problem that has a simple remedy to help your flow ease up!

I personally just had to have a surgical procedure to "kill" the inside of the uterus because of a heavy flow that would not stop for weeks on end. But, if you are still wanting to have children, this is not an option. I was too young for a total hysterectomy but needed something to stop the blood loss - it was causing anemia, and other problems!

Best of luck!

No, Super Plus tampons do not cause TSS.

*Leaving them in for too long* (more than 8 hours) can cause TSS. That's the case with ANY tampon.

Any and all tampons can cause TSS, but it is very rare. Don't leave them in for longer than 8 hours, if it's going to happen it will most likely be if they are in your body for longer than that. Seriously, don't worry about it.

yes if you leave your tampon in too long...change it several times a day at least 3 or 4 times...on your lighter day you should be using regular tampon not the supers...try using pads for you lightest days where a tampon is a waste
