I wouldn't suggest any extreme diets like the low-carb Atkins or South Beach. No diet should have to be advertised in order to get praises. A good thing to remember is follow the food pyramid, and stay away from trans or saturated fats. Natural oils from nuts and avocadoes are okay. The key is to expend more calories than you take in. If your mother is exercising a lot and burning off more calories than she is ingesting, then she will lose weight in no time. Keep in mind that while cardio and aerobics exercises burn off calories, lifting weights will actually increase muscle mass and add on some extra pounds. Just wanted to let you know. I hope this works for your mother.

You don't have to starve yourself. Most homemade meals are very healthy (unless you're frying everything and cooking everything in a lot of oil.) Eat lean meats, such as chicken and fish, and cut out the fat in the meats that you cook. Limit fast foods and other junk food (potato chips, icecream) to once every two weeks (or once a week, depending on your will.)

Replace simple carbs with complex carbs, such replace white bread with whole grain wheat bread, & eat brown rice instead of white rice.

Cut out sodas no matter what and drink water instead.

As far as exercising, you two should run in the mornings together for at least 40 minutes a day 4-5 days a week or join a fitness club together.

Eat more fruits and vegetables and drink more water.

You can lose up to a pound a week (or more) if you just do these things.

I do live a lower carb lifestyle and have for a few years now. I truly believe that if one follows it correctly, it is the best way to eat. Doing my own research is what convinced me more than the weight loss. The added benefit is that one never does have to feel hungry on it and it does reduce cravings for junk food. I don't ever count calories or fat, but I do try to keep the fat healthy. I don't particularly count my daily carbohydrate intake, I just try to stay aware of it and keep it under a certain amount per meal/snack. I do give myself a cheat day now and then but I just never go overboard. Lower carb is worth consideration. I'm contentedly at a weight I feel comfortable with these days.

I once was able to lose 50 pounds by creating my own diet. I figured out the foods I just couldn't live without (I'm not going to deprive myself) and factored them in. I ate weight watchers and lean cuisines for lunch and dinner. (they had the flavors I liked... italian, mexican & good desserts... try the peanutbutter sundae treats or key lime pie treats) I had a salad with dinner. Drank lots of water. (by the way, I love hot chocolate and so had a cup a day... the regular instant stuff. It tastes better... can't cut out everything) I also walked for about 45 minutes several times a week with a neighbor. If I went out to dinner for a special occasion or if a group of people were going out, I ate what I wanted. Once in a while won't hurt and that way you don't feel deprived watching everyone else eat delicious foods while you struggle to find something low cal. Occasional treats (and I mean occasional) make it easier to stick with a new way of eating. Best of luck to your mom.
