And don't bite my head off if this is a silly post: I read it on a bumper sticker and I'm curious if there is any legal grounds to this.

Thanks.

Although anything can happen, whether anyone could successfully sue these companies over their product would depend on whether they companies have perpetrated any fraud regarding the glucose content in their product (think tobacco companies' lies to the public regarding nicotine).

However, just for having high fructose corn syrup - No. That is a well known fact, its on the label, and the decision to drink the soda was made by the person without any fault of the companies.

The point the bumper sticker you saw was making is that there are many stupid law suits out there (think the one against McDonalds for causing people to be too fat).

PS - as for the hot coffee lawsuit, McD's had been repeatedly told to lower the temperature of their coffee and they did not listen. The woman got 3rd degree burns from the coffee. She drank it in her car, and McD's sells that coffee via drive thru, so they know people drink it in their cars. The woman won the lawsuit because 1) McD's knew their coffee temperature could cause harm, but did nothing to fix it; 2) the woman was injured as a direct result of their failure. The media doesn't discuss all of these facts on the case because it makes better news to talk about how silly that was. Tell me, if a child in a McD's had accidentally knocked over dad's coffee cup on himself and gotten 3rd degree burns, would you feel better about McD's being blamed for their failure to fix an item they had been warned was going to harm people? Its pretty much the same thing. Yes, people who drink coffee in their cars should expect it to spill on occassion, but not to get 3rd degree burns from it.

Why not? Some moron got away with suing MacDonalds because she burned herself with their hot coffee.

On the other hand, (even though as these people are saying, no one forced the Coke down someone's throat), corn syrup is way more harmful than sugar ever was. And if they made that product knowing this, then they might be guilty of causing harm to people.

But I don't think an individual should be able to cash in just because they over consumed a product. Maybe the companies that cause the diabetes should have to help fund research to cure the disease.

NO. They arent forcing people to drink their products. There is high fructose corn syrup in everything first of all and second, people are smart enough to make decisions for themselves and should be held accountable for their own actions.

proberly not, If you choose to drink the coke or pepsi knowing the possible danders that is your choice. it states all the information on the cans and by doing this it covers pepsi and coke for legal action. If it didn't state this on the cans then you would have a case

I'm sure they CAN. However, that won't stop the judge from laughing at them as he/she throws them out of court.

What? Did Coke/Pepsi/ insert company name forcefeed the product down the diabetic's throat?

People can sue for any reason.....(and this is one of the dumbest that I've ever heard of).....but yes they CAN sue.

HOWEVER......winning is another subject. I'd bet anything that they'll lose. Many states have penalties for "frivolous lawsuits" to prevent this type of thing.......so the plaintiff better have a good case when they sue someone.

no one made them drink the pop. The contents of the beverage are clearly labeled, the consumers know what they are buying. Thats why fat people cant sue macdonalds. now, if coke said thier pop is HFCS free, but it wasnt, then yes, they would have a case.

Pah-lease. People are WAY too sue happy. Take responsibility for yourself and stop blaming your bad habits on others! That's as bad as suing McD's because your overweight and their fries are too god not to eat.

I don't think os, that's why they list the ingredients right?

If someone is too stupid to read ingredients if they have to go by a special diet, then they deserve what they get.
