Spare the rod, spoil the child.
You need to do some azz whuppin' and take control of your kids.
They act like they do because you let them.

Kids will act up giving the opportunity. If they are showing disrespect then let it be known to them that that is not acceptable. Other then that it sounds like they are more comfortable to act up around you. If their behavior is unacceptable then you guys need to get together when dad is home and have a good talk. If they are just in higher spirits while you are around just let them know their exuberance is alright but no reason to get rowdy. When they have too much time on their hands and nothing to do they tend to do this too. Give them some chores or find something you can all do together that is fun.

That should've been taken care of a LONG time ago. If you're the fun parent all the time and Dad's the one who disciplines, that could be a problem. If that's not it, I can't help you. I raised a son by myself. I know how you must feel but I never had this problem because I was the fun one and disciplined him. He Knew the difference between the two of them.
I hope things work out for you though. I'll pray for you.

They may feel that you are "safer", that you won't get as upset or angry, or that you are far more likely to let them get away with unacceptable behavior.
Dads do tend to be more "scary" than Moms, although I am not really sure why. My Mom was basically nuts and would whale away on us for anything and everything, but we were really more afraid of our Dad and I don't remember him ever physically abusing any of us at any time. Go figure.

Nope, I get it too. Because you have to be strong, the disciplinarian, mean, say no to everyting. But, because you are not afraid to be strong, show confidence in being "mom", they assume you know what you are talking about and can comfort them when needed. Very confusing. Wait until they are teens

Kids usually respond better to a strong male figure. You may be too soft on them. But then again maybe your family is balanced. He's the disciplinarian and your the nurturer. What worked on me as a kid was my mom threatening to tell my dad.

Seems like they look at you more as a best friend than a parent and there has to be good balance here, you have to be a parent first and foremost. They are closer to you but you need to demand respect!

Let me guess, you let them get away with anything, and Dad was always the disciplinarian?
