It's like, a habit, like born from the early 80's and that like, whole valley girl thing. And it just like, persisted. In the 70's it was like, y'know. And my aunt had that really bad when she was young saying y'know after everything.

Simply, a poor education and poor command of the English language. It is also partly down to 'peer pressure' during our adolescent years at school, borne out of the individual's desire to be equal to their friends, and socialising with kids who also had problems with their pronunciation and diction, and so it becomes a vicious circle to the point that they become ignorant of what is 'good English'. It can be corrected in later years, but the person has to WANT to speak better English. If you know anyone who's English is so bad, sometimes 'discretion is the better part of valour', otherwise, you may want to give them a copy of this link (and book) as a gift. They may thank you for it (or not) in later years.

That irks me to no end, but there is another saying that drives me bonkers, it is worse than "like"
Havent you noticed people say "you know" all the time
Like for instance My dog lke ran you know up the street and then he ran into you know the neighbor's yard
The other thing that gripes me is ending a sentence with "at"
Like where are you at......
I was always told that when someone says that you say I am behind the "at".

It's probably a habit. It also gives the speaker more time to think before continuing their speech.
