Gross weight is the total combined weight of the load AND truck. For instance, I could weigh gross 80,000 pds.. 40 tons of truck AND freight but you cannot GO over GROSS. How many axles you have determines the gross weight. So, if truck weighs 1 1/2 tons you could legally haul 3.5 tons of freight in the truck. BUT (a caveat to many things) other things are counted against gross...your bosy weight, fuel wt, any spare tires, chains, special equipment...ALL count against that Gross weight. From my years of driving OTR I've had to run a few times at half tanks to cross scales from being over gross. Extremely dangerous and a huge fine if your over gross.

I'm not familiar with the term "curb weight" but The gross weight is how much the truck/trailer combo, and it's payload actually total. Say a truck is 17,000lbs, and the trailer is 18,000lbs. the gross combination weight is: 35,000lbs. if so, it's maximum tare or load weight would be: 45,000lbs. making it's gross combination weight. 80,000lbs.
GCVW=gross combination vehicle weight. (truck-trailer being "combination") GCVWR=gross combination vehicle weight rating. or how much total it's licensed for. There are also rules on maximum axle weight, but these vary from state to state, and, I suspect a case of "too much info" lol.
