Did you ever notice how many different faces they make when they are sleeping, faces they don't make when they are awake ? I read in a study that the young babies are actually practising what they saw during the day, since they only see so close, it's peoples faces they can focus on the best. They are learning their new facial expressions in their sleep.

I read an article recently where they questioned the belief of babies smiling because of gas. They believe it does happen but they think babies have true smiles from the day they are born.

A part of the article talked about babies smiling when they are sleeping. It suggested they may smile because this is a happy time for them when they are calm and relaxed.

Babies smile in their sleep because the angels from heaven play with them in their dreams. Well that's what my parents told me and it always brought a smile to my face when I watched my boys as babies do that.

Often some kind of sleep dream but in early infancy relief from gas, bladder or body function can do it as well. If a infant feels safe and secure in there enviroment it will happen more often

Because he/she is happy. You must be a good mom. I've worked in places that babies didn't smile, they just cried and were scared. Love is all they want, Love is all they need. Mom takes care of everything else.

They smile in their sleep because their little minds are probably processing colors, lights, and things that their brain sees when their eyes were open.

Close your eyes now..see what I mean..those dots and streaks make them smile
