Cams convert rotary motion into linear motion so basically if you something that goes round and round and you want it to go in and out put a cam in it There are thousands of uses from hammer drills to babies' toys to locks (the key is the cam)

A cam is a projecting part of a rotating wheel or shaft that strikes a lever at one or more points on its circular path. The cam can be a simple tooth, as is used to deliver pulses of power to a steam hammer, for example, or an eccentric disc or other shape that produces a smooth oscillating motion in the follower which is a lever making contact with the cam.

The cam can be seen as a device that translates motion from circular to linear. Another common example is the camshaft of a car or automobile, which takes the rotary motion of the engine and translates it into the linear motion necessary to operate the intake and exhaust valves of the cylinders.

The opposite operation, translation of linear motion to circular motion, is done by a crank. An example is the crankshaft of a car, which takes the linear motion of the pistons and translates it into the rotary motion necessary to operate the wheels.

Aside from in cars, cams are used in a lot of automata and mechanical toys such as ones that work by pushing or winding a handle and something bobs up and down.

cams are used in older washing machines to give you all the wash programs and are in a unit behind the wash selector knob
you set the knob to say wash "a" and the selector is rotated by a small motor inside which turns the cams slowly there are often quite a few which in turn come into contact with microswitches of finger contacts which then select varios functions depending how they are wired up ie cam 1 may be input water solenoid... cam 2 drain pump etc

Cams are used in all sorts of applications, essentially anywhere you want to convert rotational motion into vertical or horizontal motion.

Well a cam shaft isn't a cam is it! It's a shaft with cams on it.
So what can you use a cam for, loads of baby toys have them for starters.
