I am currently 5'10", weight 235 lbs and have a 40" (give or take) waist. Long term goals are much more (50 to 60 lbs) but I just wonder if it would be too much to expect a loss of 10 pounds in little over a month?

Thanks for all the great answers and information. I just wanted to make sure what I'm hoping to accomplish was unreasonable or unhealthy. Concerning the 2 inches - off my gut. Typical man problem area. With such good answers I can't pick one so I'll put it to a vote to who gets the points. -- Thanks again.

So you want to be 5'8"............LOL....just kidding!

My hubby has lost 16 pounds in 3 weeks just by cutting back, gave up pop, potatos, eats about 1/2 of what he did before. Eats lots of fruit now.

My ideas? Try to do 200 minutes of cardio a week. Remember fat does not turn into muscle, so you need to lose your fat while putting on muscle. Work hard, but don't over 60 minutes at a time. Do planks and other abs exercises on alternate days.

On training days, do 5-10 minutes of cardio to warm up, then do your weight training. Do 30 to 60 minutes more of cardio, then go home.

The best time to eat is just after your workout within an hour when your metabolism is raging. For your muscles, incorporate some isolated soy protein or whey protein. Whey is more potent but the soy tastes better!

Don't look at your scale as the be all and end all, but get a measuring tape to check your progress, and that will show more tangible results.

Read magazines like Shape, Womens Fitness, Fitness, etc to get tips and to stay motivated.

Good luck and stick at it. This plan has lost me 20 lbs in 12 weeks so far, just go for it!

Actually, that's absolutely reasonable. A healthy weight loss is 2 pounds per month. Anything more than that and you are basically doomed to gain it back. The key is to do it the smart way. Measure foods, make sure your portion sizes are an actual serving. Eat whole fruits and veggies, limit breads and starches (or cut them altogether, if you can stand to). Exercise daily, but for quick results, you will want to do more cardio than weight training. Aim for 30 minutes a day. Make it your goal to start every day. If you get tired in five or ten minutes, stop and try again later. But start every day, regardless. Most of the time, you will want to finish, but you have to be determined to begin- that's the hardest part. Other than that- good luck. Make good choices and start good habits. The rewards will be well worth it. :)

Thats a normal weight. Some people come on here and want to lose 10 pounds in a week. 5 weeks is reasonable though. Try the special K challenge. I lost 10 pounds in a little over 2 weeks.

Mandingo, you should get the 10 points. You are funny dude.

10 pounds and 2 inches in five weeks is OK as long as you cut back to about 26-30 fat grams a day and exercise at least 20 minutes each morning to boost the metabolism for the entire day.

2 pounds a week is very reasonible. Your first month the weight will go fast, maybe as much as 15-20 lbs. But after that 1.5 to 2 lbs a week is good, logical progression.I lost 60 lbs but it took me 9 months. That is the only way you get it off and keep it off, safely.

Try to cut your calories or burn an extra 942 a day for 5 weeks. To get to 225 you can take in 2700 calories a day. Everything you have below that will help you lose the weight. No 10 pounds in 5 weeks is not a lot.

Yes, that is very reasonable. I wish some of the other people on this site had a more sensible approach!

Losing more than 1-2lb a week, usually means you are losing muscle in addition to fat. So keep the weight loss steady and remember to exercise regularly (both cardio and weight training). This way, you will lose the fat and gain lean muscle, so you will not only be thinner, but look more toned and healthy.

Good luck : )

1 pound a week is recomended weightloss, (healthiest, most long term) 2 pounds a week is the most that is safe and healthy. So 10 pounds in 5 weeks is a good goal. 2 inches (i am assuming you mean on your combined body measurments, or even just your waist) is reasonable as well. Drinking lots of water to shed any excess water you may be retaining will help alot towards both goals.

People who are overweight or obese tend to lose tremendous amounts of weight the first few weeks they begin dieting and exercizing (my friend lost 6.5 pounds in one week just by not eating any crappy food). 4 or 5 weeks will be plenty of time to take off 10 pounds or even more.
