Can they "sense" how many cars are waiting to cross? It seems so... Is there a motion sensor or something installed in them?

Weight sensors in the road surface, just in front of the lights. Just like in the UK

This is the 1st flippant answer I've sent on this great system >
.So...I really do not care how traffic lights work at the other side of the planet, nor would my New Zealand freinds care how roundabouts work in the UK I guess.
However, an interesting enough question, but if you find out, please do not bother to let me know.

Their is a really tiny person inside the light watching your every move.
