The US military is made up of similar stock as the terrorists.
Mostly young, angry men, highly impressionable and possibly not too bright, who grew up either with fathers who fought for their country or with no food on their table, or both. They are both told they need to take violent action to solve their problems and are recruited by seasoned veterans.
The main differences between the American military and the terrorists is
1. when things go bad the commanding terrorists hide behind innocent civilians and children and tell their soldiers to fight on while the American soldiers stand in front of their soldiers and show them how to fight on despite unimaginable odds.
2. The terrorist cells are trying to bring about some armageddon so they can ultimately control the world through their religion; where the American soldiers are fighting to ensure everyone in current democracies can continue to live in religious freedom.
That doesn't say anything about G. W.'s alterior religious or economic goals, it is just comparing the US 'Military' and its actions to terrorists and their credos and actions.

The motives behind the two parties are completely different. There really isnt any equal ground between the two.
The terrorists torture TO kill in order to instill world wide fear and push their extremist methods of control and opression.
The US tortures to gain intellegence that not only exposes weaknesses in this mentioned regieme, but to prevent the deaths and terrorizing of the nation.
The prisons the terrorists are held in are still light years away from the make-shift thrid world country prisons that the terrorists conduct their acts in. Even if the US keeps them awake for days, bags their heads, starves them for days at a time, its still better than anything our POW's suffer at the hands of terrorists.
War is war. Intellegence prevents deaths. People should stop freaking out over every little detail of our wars. Death is a part of life. Obviously the terrorists have come to terms with that... in a very extreme way.

Bush is trying to recreate the defination of the Geneva convention for his own agenda, so he can do as he may without it looking like he's breaking international law.
He just wants to legalize American military terrorism and torture and that's what it really boils down to.

no he is not "creating a moral equivalency between us by attempting to legalize torture" he is trying to protect our people from liberal judges and others who wish to harm America...its better to have a set of laws for what torturers can and cannot do rather than have no laws and let them do whatever...i don't see any Americans chopping heads off, do you.
beside to compare morality...we did not start this war...we are not going out of are way to kill anyone who disagrees with us...they are...does that not count for anything to you...

No, they're both killing people because they believe in a cause, we think that they're evil, but they think we're evil. Same with Nazis. Who do you think would have been an evil dictator if they won, Hitler or FDR? The Jew thing would have been viewed as a regrettable mistake that was no one's fault, just like our fair country's extermination of the Native Americans.
