Yes, and then Strom Thurmond (sp) helped form the Dixiecrats. What does this have to do with the Social Democrat party in Germany pre-WWII?

They still exist as the second oldest political party in Germany.
They split from the Communist party shortly after the 1.st world war as a less radical group who wanted to get social reform through democratic means, where the Communists wanted the "Dictatorship of the proletariate"
Both Communists and Social Democrats stood together in resitance to Hitler and the Nazis, many of them were murdered and tortured in the concentration camps.

The Third Reich were leftists and Hitler was Liberal. The reason they collapsed was Hitler's doctor who prescribed him methanphedimene causing him to loose his mind.
