They fight FOR freedom. Their own freedom, usually.

You can't legitimately be a freedom fighter if your victory wouldn't immediately and directly result in your own freedom from oppression in your own homeland.

this is a really good question. Freedom fighters are a label used by the US government to describe resistors to another country who is our enemy. So, when afganistans were fighting russia from taking over afganistan, they were called freedom fighters. When the same fighers resist the US, they are called insurgents or taliban and the US army becomes the freedom fighters.
