The dissident group led by McCain — and backed by Powell, Bush's first-term secretary of state — said Bush's approach would jeopardize the safety of U.S. troops.

Powell said Bush's proposal would redefine the Geneva Conventions and encourage the world to "doubt the moral basis of our fight against terrorism" and "put our own troops at risk."

Powell & McCain are right.
This is nothing more than Bush trying once again to circumvent the international laws against torture.

As far as jepordizing the troops, they shouldn't be where they don't belong in the first place. We are wasting precious lives and recourses in Iraq. Al-Queda did not go to Iraq until after we attacted under false pretences.

I am a Republican, and first I have to say that I do not consider McCain a hero of any kind, heroes don't run around screaming look at me I shine brighter than you. Heroes are ordinary people that do extraordinary things and don't tout them! I disagree with all of them, I think it's fine to at the very least define what can and cannot be done to prisoners. This enemy lobs heads off, what do we do? Offer them cookies and koolaide?

The first rule of war is that young men die. I personally believe that war, and in particular the Iraq war is the root cause of the peril. We should keep or interests here in the US and stop trodding on foreign soil with no cause beyond oil. Alternative fuel, now.
