Why were they able put a minimum on how low gas stations can sell it. If they can interfere like that with companies like the gas stations, why can they not put a max on how much the oil companies can sell it for? Because the gas stations don't sponsor there elections with millions of dollars, thats why. Anyone agree? Or am I mistaken?

Please explain how I am mistaken as I very well could be.

The minimmum was set so gas stations could not sell it under cost. Otherwise it would not be fair to the mom and pop stations whose main source of revenue is from selling gas.

I don't know of any minimum, but I would not be surprised. I think what you may mean by a minimum is that if the gas stations sold gas for 1 cent a gallon, there still would be taxes per gallon.
I don't know how it would be possible to put a limit on how much the oil companies can charge, they are not part of the United States so we have no way to limit that. The gas stations are trying to make a profit so they can exist. They have done some price gouging, but the oil prices are indeed going up. Any time you regulate something you interfere with the economy, and I think it's a bad idea altogether. What regulates prices really are supply and demand. If the gas prices are too high, then go to another gas station. If all the gas stations are too high, then get an electric car. If everyone did that, the gas prices would drop. So the prices are balanced between making the people too mad and turning to alternate fuels and what people will put up with. Frankly if you look around people are still buying Hummers, and SUV's so they think we are just suckers for more punishment.
Americans are in love with thier gas powered vehicles and are willing to pay the price, probably all the way up to $4.00 a gallon, so why not charge that amount? I almost wish they would charge way too much so we finally start developing alternate fuels, I hate getting my car smogged.
