First off, whats the sex?
Take a wicker basket and take either blue or pink ribbon, depending on the sex and glue around the edges, makes it pretty.. Then fill the bottom with tissue paper, pink or blue...Then put a bag of diapers in the basket, baby shampoo, baby wash, baby lotion, diaper wipes, Q-tips, diaper rash medicine...It are all things that a new mother needs, but people neglect to give..Thats what I gave my cousin when she had her new baby, she LOVED it, and its really cute, they can use the basket to put toys or clothes in. Or better use use a moses basket and put the stuff in it, that way she also as the moses basket to put the new baby in..Those are very useful.

A lot of people have registered at stores. You can go to those stores and find out from customer service what you can bring. You can bring any type of baby clothing(newborn+), baby bottles, baby toys, baby wash, oil, shampoo, powder. Most people will bring clothes. She will benefit from pampers(Pampers &Huggies are good) and wipes and bottles. Pacifiers, bibs, diaper rash creme...Gift cards are truly wonderful because there will be several neccesities not given at the baby shower!
Have fun.

If it's a first time mother, I say a head supporter. Im not sure of any make or model, but its pretty much a pillow with a semicircle cut out of it sewn to a soft blanket. That way, the baby's head won't get all flat and deformed.

some people are registered palces. a sk if they are. a great gift to give is a basket with unisex unsies, diapers, baby shampoo, bottles, cremes, powder, and other little things parents need but no one thinks to give them.
i always include a hand knitted blanket with the basket but thats hard if you don't knit.

Daipers...lots of diapers, they will come in handy, they can be quite expensive for the mother to buy, and you could buy a few "jumbo boxes" as a nice gesture. Then add a small "cute" item too, like an outfit, or a teddybear.

Why don't you just buy her a gift card from Babies'r'us or from any store so she can buy her own stuff? That's what I do when I don't know what kind of present to buy and it works out great because they get to pick their gift!
