Yes. Come to think of it we have way too many differences in our own country as well. Therefore I propose we bring a bill before congress.

We need to committ every adult and child over the age of twelve to a re-education program. The purpose of this program will be to make EVERYONE think and act the same. We won't worry too much about the younger children because we can indoctrinate them early wuithout too much touble. This program will include medication and hypnosis. If we see the children or late adults veering from the attitudes we will send them to special camps for the hard cases. Then we will send a computerised unit to ever home to make sure these attitudes are being enforced and followed.

Come to think of it... there is way too much international diversity. So... after we work on oiur own country we will have to conquer the world; which will be easy considering we are already all on one accord because we think and act the same.

Of course-- this is rediculous. This whole scenario hopefully nobody would ever seriously consider. The shudders I can already imagine prove an interesting American point though. This country was founded on different ideas, nationalities, thinking patterns, et cetera. This country doesn't even have an official language. Don't believe me? Do the research. I both respect and admire most of these differences.

We always scream about our own rights. However; sadly most Americansa who scream loudest about their rights are also screaming loudest against other's rights. Truth is we have to respect the diversity of others. It's part of what makes America what it is.

In regards to learning the primary language ... I agree, everyone should learn english because it is a way of communicating. In case of an emergency especially. It isn't at all difficult if your mind is set to it. Both my parents learned at about age 30 when first coming to this country [legally.] We should not have to learn 45 different languages rather have the foreigners learn just one. Reading is mandatory as well ... for driving, or warning signs and things of that nature.

Your question: That my dear is something called the 'Melting Pot'. To have all the different cultures become one ... primarily the culture of 'majority'. I personally think that you shouldn't have to assimilate. That is the same thing as wearing uniform when attending school. I was against that in grade school and I am still now. I appreciate differences ... it is an expression of individualism. If that were the case, and we were to all 'melt into one pot' then we wouldn't be any different from the rest of the world. This country is known for it's diversity ... and I think it's beautiful.

Well a lot of women from India already speak English, and Arab women most often after they are here awhile and the men cant control how they dress they also assimilate.
Assimilation doesn't mean trying to be American ,it means trying to adjust to the country so that you can get along better. To learn the language spoken in the country you live in is only smart .You get better higher paying jobs etc.I don't care if you wear the flag of your birth country as a dress as long as you try to speak the language and learn our ways too.Who knows you might learn to like them too.We are not your guests ,you are ours, and as a guest you should be nice to your host and not try to change her house or her language .If I were a guest in your home country I would try to learn your language and customs. Its simple.

By the way I speak Spanish, and Cajun French and I am learning(trying) to learn Japanese for an upcoming extended business trip next year.

When my great grandparents came over here legally at the turn of the last century they didn't know English, yet went out of their way to make sure they they knew the language. Then they made sure that their kids knew English more then they knew the language of the old country. If my great grandparents could do it in 1900 with the little educational resources they had, then these people should do it with the amount of resources they have today.

Yes people should assimilate. The old addage is the best, " do in Rome as the Romans do".
It should also apply when foreigners comit crime. 1 x strike and out. I think this happens in Australia, if I'm "right right I'm bloody well right" as the song goes. If you go to another country cause you think it will all round be better for you, have the common decency to fit in with the way of the new hosts.

Leaning the language of the country that you live in isn't assimilating necessarily, its a way of being able to exercise your human rights.

This is particularly relevant when the majority of citizens who don't speak English are women (at least this is the case in the UK)

This means they have less access to employment, medical services, legal services community and social life.

Multilingualism is a blessing, inabiltiy to communicate and get the full benefits of the place where you live is not.

There is nothing wrong with people bringing their culture over. Infact, thats what makes America the so called "Melting Pot" of the world. But at the same time, if one wishes to communicate with the majority, then they must learn the language, rather than getting upset and forcing people to learn their language. They came here, we didn't go there.

Its because of those who refuse to learn English that I can't even get a job where I live because I refuse to cater to those who refuse to learn English.

I have no problem with other cultures coming here as long as they do it legally, but they must respect that English is the official language. I don't care if they dress in their cultural dress. That has nothng to do with speaking the language. My grandfather came here from Italy in the 20's and he HAD to learn English to survive. All other immigrants should have to figure it out too instead of our government forcing our kids to choose between Spanish and French in school. Americans speak English, English, English!

How many of the fortune 500 company's are run by non-english speakers?

When my grandmother and her family came here from Sweden, none of them spoke English. but her father my great grandfather, made a house rule that only English was to be spoken the house. i live in southern California, and i think it is sad for a family to come here and not make it mandatory for their family to at least learn the language. their setting their children up for failure. in the schools in California we have class taught in Spanish for Spanish speaking students. where in America are they going to get a job speaking only Spanish. i believe in assimilation, but not forgetting ones heritage, i am also half native American. and i pose this question, how many of the fortune 500 company's are run by non-english speakers?
