Download and install this Windows checker, it will see if your machine is ready for Vista and tell you what you need to up-grade or change and in some instances delete.

yes. although it would be a good idea to stick with XP until about 6 months after vista is released. by then, all the bugs should be fixed and perhaps a price break can be found somewhere.

i myself will likely never use vista on my home pc. im currently making the transition to linux.

and as for the guy who answered before me, NO you will not need a new graphics card. an nvidia 7900 GTX is more than sufficient to run ANY program both now and the near future.

It will work fine for everything but DirectX 10 games. Once they start rolling out, be prepared to upgrade video cards.

Also the minimum requirements depend on which version of Vista you plan on using.

Vista Home Basic (non-Aero):
at least 800MHz processor, 512MB of system memory and a graphics processor that is DirectX 9 capable.

Vista Home Premium (Aero):
1GHz 32-bit or 64-bit processor, 1GB of system memory, 40GB of hard drive capacity with 15GB free space, a DVD-ROM drive, audio output capabilities and Internet access. Full Aero features require a DirectX9.0 card with minimum 128MB graphics memory and Pixel Shader 2.0 capability.

Im running Aero just fine on my machine as I type this, using an onboard ATi Radoen X200 chip, Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core 4200+ and 2GB of DDR

i dont think *all* the bugs in vista will ever be fixed... look at MSs previous record... 5 years down the line and XP still has tons of bugs...

bravo on your transition to linux.. i think linux is rapidly maturing as a desktop OS... read ubuntu ;-)... and would be the obvious choice of anyone savvy enough to know that there are OSs other than those from MS...

i would suggest the asker gives ubuntu a spin if he/she plans on changing OSs... its free... its user friendly... its stable... its upgraded and fixed almost on a daily basis via small downloads... and the community is great with tons of helpful folks... try ubuntu and see if vista is really worth the extra cost. in the end the choice is yours... i have made mine :-)

ps. you can get them to send you the install cd for free... at the shipit link on the site... and also google for automatix which will install everything else you need for a trully complete desktop experience with non-free (as in free speech) goodies!

What is 7900GTX??? Give more details about your config. But preliminary details are an A-okay for Vista. But they still have some problems. So run it at your risk.
