Invest in a heating pad and some midol for the cramps, if you don't feel like being connected to the wall outlet you can get one of those beany sacks you put in the microwave to warm up, they're great. Try deep breathing too when a wave of a really bad cramp rolls on you. I used to get REALLY bad cramps, the crawl in bed and sleep the day away cramps... these techniques help make it bearable.
For the mood swings... I figure out on the calender when my period is coming so about a week before I KNOW that I'm overly emotional. I try not to make decisions based on the way I feel during that time. (even though I REALLY want to). *I actually quit my job once cause I was overly emotional!!! But they took me back, I said I was having a really bad day!* I don't tell my hubby when I'm super irritated with him during that time. I just keep the overwhelming feelings to myself and tell myself that if I still feel that way after my period is over then I'll do something about it. Just try to keep in mind that the emotions you're feeling aren't how you really feel. I hope that helps. It's the only way I know how to do it without meds. I'm on the pill and I still get overly emotional, it only helps with the cramps for me.

The pain is normal as are the mood swings. Evening Primrose Oil is supposed to help with mood swings, and pain killers for the pain. I take 600mg Ibuprofen when it gets bad.

The pain is normal as long as it's not too bad
I cut out caffeine from my diet a couple of years ago and the mood swings have gone entirely. i used to get mad, cry, scream, all sorts. But now - nothing. It's worth a try
