Those actually aren't the best examples of the US supporting non-democratic countries.
Try:
Iran - the CIA overthrew the legitimate democracy and installed the sha
Nicaragua - supported Samoza, and when the Sandanista's overthrew him, the US violated international law in its support of the contras
El Salvador, Panama, Argentina, Vietnam, Grenada, Haiti, etc.
The average american isn't well informed on history.

It is not "simply" whether countries are internally democratic that we judge states, we often look at how they behave towards other states or groups of people.
Many "democratic" countries form alliances with countries that have questionable human rights records and questionable records of aggression towards other countries.
The reasons can be many, and different parts of the government of the USA may be involved for different reasons.
1) Economic benefit - new markets, new resources
2) To use economic leverage to promote democracy or human rights improvements.
3) To maintain geographical presence in a region.
Sometime all of these are the reasons and sometimes none of them.
The Israel Palesting issue is not necessarily best described as democratic/undemocratic issue.

Why refer to these government as undemocratic? Democracies operate in ther own fashion and do not have to copy North American models
