Like someone else said, old classic era muscle cars were famous for eating gas, but as htey said they were not designed for economy anyway....however, my experiences with normal everyday cars of the Sixties and Seventies showed me that more than a few everyday type luxury boats of those eras were not too thrifty on gas either. Here are two personal examples...

1. 1970 Cadillac Coupe DeVille. This great running and looking car had a 425 V-8 that just drank fuel, premium fuel... and probably got no better than 12 MPG.

2. 1978 Lincoln Towncar. This 4 door monster boat had a 460 V-8 and got no better than 13 MPG TOPS on a sheer highway only trip!!! Around town in mixed driving was around 9 to 11 MPG! Unreal, but it sure was a nice and comfortable car though!

Just two examples, but I knew plenty of others with gas hog Chevies and the like as well, so not so unusual before 1980 or so. No wonder why we wasted so much fuel, it was a bit rare in the old days to own an American car that got more than 20 MPG pre to 1980.

Late 60's, early 70's muscle cars got that kind of gas mileage.

Camaros
Mustangs
Vettes
Chargers

All these cars and more from that era got poor gas mileage but to pay too much attention to this fact is to miss the reason they were built in the first place.

The most desirable models of these cars were incredibly fast even if they couldn't stop all that well by today's standards.

Most of these cars in perfect condition will cost you upwards of $85,000. After adjusting for inflation they are roughly worth 2.5 to 3 times their original selling prices.

Good investment.
