My 2 1/2 year old son now has learned how to unhook his carseat himself. It scares me that he has learned how to unhook it. It is already a complicated carseat to lock. He has learned to strap himself in and out now.I have been driving down the road and see him on the floor in the back of the car and trying to climb in the front seat. I have tried spanking him when he does it but, that seems to not work. Anybody else have this problem? What can I do?

I would still go to the store and experiment with other carseats and their features. See if there is one that he for sure can not open. Make sure the straps are snug fitting. If he can bend forward enought to see the click that unlocks the carseat it may be too loose. I would offer him a toy bag, put a couple of small soft toys in it for him to use while you drive. I recomend soft because hard toys can be a danger in an accident (items flying around). I wouldn't spank him. Children his age don't really connect spanking with something they have done wrong, but rather "mommy really hurt me". If he stays in his carseat I would offer a small reward at the end of a trip... like "What a good job you did, you sat in your carseat all the way to Grammys house!"
Good Luck

You need to be firm. It seems like your child has a lack of respect for your authority. That's not good at all, so you really really need to take action now, because your child could become a very rebelious child at early age, or completely blatant as a teenager. Stop the car immediately and talk very stern. Take away toys. Punishment. This is serious.
Talk to your child before you go on the road. But always always have authority!

my son did the same thing. the connection that is between the child's legs remove that and turn it around so the button to unhook the upper straps is turned around and aiming in to the child.. this is harder for you to unhook him but is way hard for the child to escape.

when my first one did this, I had to correct her, and when it didn't work, (spankings are not for EVERY wrongdoing) I found that explaining that if a police man saw them out of thier seat, he would pull us over and give mommy a ticket or take mommy to jail. this worked well
for my second one, I kept a small bag of goodies and when we got to where we were going, and if he stayed in his seat, he got a goodie. then he stopped getting out, and no longer needs goodies either

Tell him that if he gets out of the car seat again while the vehicle is moving, he will DIE and never see Mommy or Daddy or Spot the dog again!
